Miscellaneous

I took this shot of Inner Farne lighthouse, Northumberland, because I was struck by the stillness of the sea. The ripples give the picture an oily effect.
A simple shot of seaweed and shells. The seaweed coils curl into the picture which adds extra interest.

Flowers

I spotted this fungus with interesting colourings, whilst walking through a wood. I thought the texture of the fungus was an interesting contrast to the moss on the tree bark.

The three photographs of flowers, pictured to the below, are part of my experiment with depth of field.

Wildlife

I spent a lot of time as a child trying to capture pictures of birds in flight but was also defeated by the digital camera's time delay. A new camera in my early teens finally helped me solve the problem and I've always been in particularly proud of the barn owl, pictured to the right. In spite of the overcast day the bird is frozen in flight with a fast shutter speed whilst retaining the detail of it's feathers. I think the slight offset of the bird in the pictures adds to the effect.

Two contrasting shots of arctic terns. The first a detailed shot of the bird feeding it's chick. The second slight camera blur adds to the movement of the bird displaying to arrival.

I used the clouds to frame this shot of an owl on its handler’s glove. The handler's arm appears in silhouette leaving the focus on the bird.

I've tried a number of times at animals in zoos and always been disappointed with the results because frequently the background detracts from the image. This year I used a 55 to 200 mm zoom lenses to take close up shots of the animal themselves, eliminating the background noise and trying to capture their character.

Architecture

Sycamore Gap

Sycamore Gap is a classic shot on Hadrian's Wall. I wanted to take a slightly different view on it and explored shots from above. I also took a shot looking into the tree which although it could be any sycamore adds a new twist to the classic shot.

Light and Water

This sequence of photographs is part of my experiment with light and water. With the final photo I was trying to capture the interaction between light, water and reflection.

Fountains Abbey (2011)

In 2011 I borrowed a DSLR camera and spent the day at Fountains Abbey. My intention was to take as many different genre photographs as possible.

Some of the results can be found here.
